Our Story
The story of First Presbyterian Church of South Amboy begins in 1864, when a small group of believers gathered to establish a Presbyterian church in a growing railroad town along the Raritan Bay. The congregation held its first meeting in a local schoolhouse, celebrated the Lord’s Supper with fifteen members, and soon received land on which a permanent church building would be constructed. By 1868, the sanctuary that still stands today had become a home for worship, prayer, and gospel ministry.
From the beginning, our church was rooted in the historic Christian faith and the rich heritage of Presbyterianism. For generations, believers in South Amboy gathered here to worship Christ, proclaim His Word, and serve their community. Through times of growth, hardship, cultural change, and world events, God faithfully sustained this congregation and preserved its witness.
In recent years, the church entered a new chapter in its history. Seeking to remain firmly committed to the authority of Scripture, the lordship of Jesus Christ, and the historic truths of the gospel, the congregation voted to join the Evangelical Presbyterian Church (EPC), a denomination that stands within the Reformed tradition and traces its heritage to the Protestant Reformation.
Today, First Presbyterian Church is experiencing a season of renewal and revitalization. While we cherish the faithfulness of those who came before us, our focus is not on preserving the past but on proclaiming Christ in the present. We are committed to expository preaching, gospel-centered worship, meaningful discipleship, and serving our community with the love of Christ.
